Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry with Bela Fleck

Please tell me this isn't a selective memory/flashback, but I definitely recall at some point in mid-80s (later/earlier?) Bela Fleck opening for Jerry (not sure if JGB, but can't imagine it was the Dead) at the Greek Theatre. I had no idea who Bela was, as neither did people I was with - we were guessing a blues act. Anyway, I recall a very long and good The Harder They Come with Jerry and Bela trading licks. Anyone have any idea about this show? Thanks for any directions in the right way to find same

I have faint recollections of Bella opening up for JGB out west somewhere, late 80's, at a ski resort or something.

I saw Bella a few months ago, and his shows keep getting better and better.

You're thinking of the time the Jerry Garcia Band played at Squaw Valley - just outside the Gold Coast Lodge, 1/2 way up the mtn. I think it was called the Squaw Valley Summer Music Fest. Bill Graham had wanted to pull it off for a number of years and finally did in August of '91. He was never able to do it again on the mtn. because of drought/fire danger.

I've often said that was the best party that I'd ever been to. Great music - wonderful vibe among the crowd. The backdrop of the stage was Squaw Valley's famous "Palisades" - 100+ foot cliffs - and the whole mountain. It was too beautiful for words. Also, there was rollerblading at the rink at the top of the gondola and lots of great music - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Jimmy Cliff, The Neville Brothers (I think?!?!) and some other good names I can't remember... it's been a long time!

The 1st night the Garcia band closed the show with an electric set. There was so much wind whipping thru the mics that the sound was pretty bad and the band was to play an acoustic set the following day. So at the end of the show they announced that Jerry would open up the show the following day at 12 p.m. - to avoid the late afternoon wind. He closed the acoustic show with a Ripple and the crowd was so quiet listening the tune that you couldn't hear anything when the tune would come to a pause or lull. It was sooooo great. Again - the best party that I've ever been to!!

Neil Young with Booker T and the MGs. The Nevilles were also there.

Bluedevil,

Those pics are great, man. And they help bring back some of the great memories of that very special weekend. Reading some of the bt.etree posts help, too.

Thanks a bunch, compaƱero!

No problem. I was there (used to live in Squaw, taught at Squaw Valley Academy that was at entrance there right off road (89?) leading from Truckee to Tahoe City - ah, the Bridgetender) and had a blast at those shows.
